MORE PROGRESS

HERE'S A SHOT OF THE SOUTH SIDE WITH THE SHAKES REMOVED. THE WOOD PROVED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION, BUT THE STUFF CALLED CARDBOARD WHICH UNDERLIES THE SHAKES WAS NOT IN GOOD CONDITION, AND PROBABLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE MUSTY ODOR IN THE HOUSE. WE THINK THE HOUSE SMELLS BETTER. THE NEW SIDING WILL BE APPLIED ON THE SOUTH SIDE IN A DAY OR SO. THE NEW FRONT DOOR WILL BE INSTALLED IN ANOTHER TWO DAYS. THE FRONT WILL BE LAST TO BE DONE. THE ENTIRE JOB PROBABLY WILL BE FINISHED IN ANOTHER WEEK, WEATHER PERMITTING.

THE DUMPSTER

THIS WILL GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF THE VOLUME OF THE MATERIALS WHICH ARE BEING DISCARDED/REPLACED IN THIS PROJECT WHICH IS ABOUT 40%completed so far.
MORE PROGRESS ON THE HOUSE

THIS PICTURE GIVES A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRAST THE NEW GRAY WITH THE OUTGOING RED. AT THIS POINT, ABOUT 40% OF THE HOUSE IS FINISHED.
THANKSGIVING 2006

THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING, 2006. MAX POLANSKY, MARY, MOE AND BOB HUDDLED AROUND THE TABLE.
OLD BOB'S EXCITING CELLAR

EVER BEEN DOWN CELLAR IN BOB'S HOUSE? PROBABLY NOT OR YOU WOULD HAVE DISCOVERED A TREASURY OF OLD STORM GLASS SELDOM SEEN IN THE WESTERN WORLD. AS MOESKI AND NOONSKI HAVE GOTTON AROUND OVER THE MILLENNIA, THEY HAVE VISITED COLLEGE BOOK STORES AND BOUGHT THINGS SUCH AS CUPS, AND WINDOW STICKERS. A LARGE NUMBER OF STICKERS ACCUMULATED OVER TIME, AND WERE LANGUISHING IN A FILE DRAWER IN THE LONESOME CELLAR ARCHIVES OF A LONESOME PLACE IN CONNECTICUT. IN THE SAME CELLAR WERE DOZENS OF OLD STORM GLASS WHICH WOUND UP THERE AS NEW WINDOWS WERE INSTALLED. WHAT DO DO WITH THE STICKERS. NOONSKI DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH CARS TO STICK THEM ON. ERGO! . WHAT AN IDEA--PUT THE STICKERS ON OLD STORM GLASSES AND DISPPLAY THEM. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY NEWLY STICKERED STORM GLASSES NEVER MADE IT OUT OF THE CELLAR. MAYBE THE WORLD IS NOT YET READY FOR THEIR UNVEILING. IN FACT, NOBODY EXCEPT OUR FURNACE CLEANING MAN EVER NOTICED THEM--ALL EIGHT PROUDLY TRANSFORMING AN OTHERWISE MUNDANE, EVEN DANK, CELLAR. NOONSKI STILL THINKS THESE OBJECTS WOULD LOOK GREAT IF PROPERLY PRESENTED IN A REC ROOM SOMEPLACE. TAKE A LOOK AT ONE OF THEM.

OUR FRIEND, AIMEE

AIMEE IS A UCONN JUNIOR WHO WORKS FOR THE MANSFIELD COMMUNITY CENTER ON A PART-TIME BASIS. SHE WORKS IN THE FITNESS AREA ADVISING MEMBERS ABOUT EXERCISE MATTERS. AIMEE LEARNED OUR NAMES THE FIRST TIME WE MET HER, AND SHE NEVER FAILS TO GIVE US A BIG SMILE AND CALL OUT OUR NAMES WHEN WE COME IN. THIS IS ENOUGH REASON TO LIKE HER ALREADY, BUT SHE MADE A GESTURE THE OTHER DAY WHICH WAS VERY TOUCHING, AND WE WANT TO SHOW YOU, IF MY LIMITED BLOGGING SKILLS WILL ALLOW. MOE WAS SICK LAST WEEK, AND WHEN I WENT TO THE CLUB BY MYSELF, AIMEE WAS ON THE DESK, AND IMMEDIATELY INQUIRED AS TO MOE'S WHEREABOUTS. I EXPLAINED THAT MOE WASN'T FEELING WELL ENOUGH TO EXERCISE THAT DAY. WE EXCHANGED PLEASANTRIES, AND I WENT ABOUT MY WALKING ROUTINE. WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE TRACK AREA, AIMEE WAS WAITING FOR ME WITH THE NOTE FOR MOE WHICH I HOPE TO ATTACH. MOE AND I WERE MOVED BY THE THOUGHFULNESS OF THIS YOUTHFUL FRIEND.
TONY NAPLES
TONY NAPLES' PORTRAIT, HANGING ON THE WALL IN ONE OF OUR BEDROOM S, WAS SOMETIMES CREDITED WITH BEING THE UNDERLYING PRESENCE WHICH CAUSED FEAR IN SOME PEOPLE. TAKING ANOTHER LOOK AT TONY, HE WAS A HANDSOME GUY. TONY WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED GUY, TOO. HE GOT OFF THE BOAT FROM SAVIANO, ITALY AT AGE 27, SPEAKING LITTLE OR NO ENGLISH, YET HE HAD HIS OWN BUSINESS, BUILT HIS OWN HOUSE, HAD TWO SONS HE PUT THROUGH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION, LEFT HIS MARK ON MANY A SIDEWALK HE CONSTRUCTED AS A CONTRACTOR IN NEW BRITAIN. IF YOU ARE EVER AROUND CENTRAL CONNECTICUT UNIVERSITY, LOOK AROUND THE STREETS NEAR THE COLLEGE, AND YOU WILL FIND "TONY NAPLES GENERAL CONTRACTOR." HE
HELPED FOUND ST. ANNE'S CHURCH, WAS A LEADER IN ITALIAN SOCIETIES IN THE CITY, AND HAD HIS OBITUARY ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE NEW BRITAIN HERALD WHEN HE DIED. DON'T BE AFRAID OF TONY. JUST BE SORRY YOU NEVER MET HIM.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SCHOLARSHIP
THE NOONAN VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE ROCKVILLE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN 1985 ON OCCASION OF NOONSKI'S RETIREMENT FROM ELLINGTON HIGH. IT WAS IN HONOR OF HIS WORK WITH COOPERATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE IN THE TRI-TOWN AREA. THE SCHOLARSHIP WAS AWARDED FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS IN ELLINGTON, TOLLAND AND ROCKVILLE HIGH SCHOOLS. THE RACC BECAME PART OF THE LARGER TOLLAND COUNTY CHAMBER, AND SO THE SPONSORING ORGANIZATION CEASED TO EXIST. ERGO, NO MORE NOONAN SCHOLARSHIPS. THIS YEAR, THE TCCC PUBLISHED A LIST OF MILESTONES IN THE COMBINED HISTORY OF THE TWO CHAMBRS. THOUGHT IT WOULD BE OF INTEREST, SO OBTAINED TEAR SHEETS SHOWING ENTIRE LISTING. i TNHINK I WILL HAVE TO MAIL THEM.

Ohio Goes Blue, Finally!!
For the first time since we have lived in Ohio (about 15 years, hard to believe) we have a Democratic governor. The news said it had been 16 years since the last Democratic governor. The newly elected governor, Strickland, easily beat Ken Blackwell. Blackwell is well known in Ohio, and probably across the U.S. as well, for the role he played in allowing voting difficulties in Cleveland during the 2004 Presidential election. He himself is a black man, a Republican black man, and a disgrace. The outgoing gov was found guilty of many ethics violations. Another congressman (Republican) from southern Ohio will be on his way to jail soon since he was found guilty of fraud.
We now also have a Democratic congressman in the Akron area, the incumbent had been around for about 6 years and was reasonably respected, his problem was that he was affiliated with the wrong political party when this wave came through! With the Democrats in majority in the House and Senate, let's hope one of the first orders of business is impeaching that wreckless cowboy!

PROGRESS ON THE HOUSE

The back of the house proved to be a huge job. Most of the plywood had to be replaced because the original stuff had delaminated. We think a lot of the mustiness in tbe house had to come from there. As you can see, the wrap in on the backside, and awaits the vinyl siding.
The builder thinks he will find more delaminations on the driveway side, and less on the other two sides. Whatever it takes! They did the roof first, and had to replace 27 sheets of plywood which will add a couple of extra thousands to the cost--it will be added to the price agreed on by the agency and the builder. Our builder has a great reputation. He told me today that he has already done 6 houses in our area---and we only found out about the program last February.
Young Professional

I think I'm finally a member of the Footnotes blog!
Kelly stopped by for lunch today while I was working from home. It struck me how much she's grown up ...... when did that happen? She was all dressed up so I decided to take a picture of her in front of the house .... just like I have for 22 years. I'll add this one to the scrap book.

VETERANS DAY

Noonski has noted that WWII ended 60 years ago. Wow. When the history teacher at EHS got to WWII, he would call in Noonski to describe his part in the fray. After a few years, Noonski didn't get invited anymore. When Noonski asked the history teacher why the annual invitation had been discontinued, he was told, "Every year your role got more important, and MacArthur's got less." I suppose there was some exageration on Noonski's part, but come on. (this assumes this generation has heard of General Douglas MacArthur, who headed up the Pacific campaign.) I'm trying to add a link which will take you to Noonski's account of the battle for Okinawa. Somewhere in the same site there is an anonymous poem dedicated to YMS experience. Noonski did not write the poem but did submit it to the webmaster.
A CAUSE?

Here's what has been lurking beneath the shakes on the back of the house all these years. That's mold you're looking at, and lots of it. Our builder thinks part of the problem is that the people who built these houses in the early '60's did not vent the shower/bathrooms. Moisture found its way into the structure, and combined with an attic venting system now known to be inadequate, and water getting out of the gutters and coming down the back of the house it bacame a breeding place for the mold you see. The wood under the shakes has largely delaminated and ca n be pulled off the building with ease. All this stuff will removed and replaced with new plywood, and a wrap which goes on under the vinyl siding

A FEW WORDS OF EXPLANATION
Some readers might have suspected that Noonski is not the foremost blog architect known to the western world. A case in point: observe the title of the blog. In a effort to link the two blogs, Noonski began tampering with the Template portion of the blog, adding what seemed to make sense. Now, at least for the present, what you see when you boot up is not what you are used to seeing. Noonski, being the great delegator he is, welcomes assistance from readers in changing the title back to what it used to be.

HALLOWEEN NIGHT AT NOONSKI'S

That's Noonski sporting a new, more youthful 'do, casting a wary glance down the street on Halloween night in expectation of the arrival of hordes of youthful acquisitors. The town has exploded with mansions, and this is part of Noonski's problem. Mansions have long driveways, and it would take all night for a kid to fill a pillow case with free candy if he had to work his own neighborhood. Driving a kid to an old development simplifies the problem. The driveways are short, as is Noonski's temper on Halloween night. Carloads of kids are dropped off while parents cruise nearby. Pillow cases are filled in short order, and the kids are back in their mansions all nice and comfy in their jammies without disruption of nightly routines. Noonski put out the front lights by a quarter of eight, and neighbors followed shortly thereafter, evidently waiting for somebody to say "that's enough!"

Just learning

I'm putting my computer skills to the test- this time I'm attempting to post more than one photo. Bob does it a lot and it's fun to see lots of pictures. I don't want to be too obnoxious and post nothing but stuff about my kids, but here are two photos I had on hand.
The picture of Andy playing soccer was given to me by the mother of a team mate--she was learning how to use her digital camera.
The picture of Grace and her two friends was taken just after they won their division at the mini triathalon our town had this summer. Note they are wearing their "winner" shirts.
