JOHN "MICKEY" NOONAN PLAYED HERE
Mickey  was a prominent  baseball player  (catcher)   for   the  Pioneers   baseball  team  in   New  Britain.  In  his  earlier  years  the  Pioneers   were  the  best  in   the  city.  They  played  an  exhibition   game  against    a  touring  big  league  team  (Boston ?)  which  featured  Babe  Ruth.  The   Babe  fancied  himself a  base stealer,  and  tried  it  against  the  Pioneers---Mickey  threw  him  out  at  second  base.

This picture was taken in 1919 at Pioneer Field on East Main/Stanley streets in New Britain. The factory in the background was North and Judd Manufacturing Company, once a prominent employer in the city. In later years, the field was desert
ed and was called the Acid. A shopping center was developed there.
