BOB STEELE, LEGEND

BOB STEELE HOSTED A MORNING SHOW ON WTIC RADIO FOR SOMETHING LIKE 36 YEARS. HE WAS WITH THE STATION FOR 60 YEARS. HE BECAME LEGENDARY FOR HIS JOKES, AND HIS UNCANNY ABILITY TO PICK LOSERS IN SPORTS EVENTS. IN ALL THOSE YEARS, HE NEVER USED A VULGARITY, OR SUGGESTIVE SEXUAL REFERENCE, AND HE WAS ON SIX DAYS A WEEK. ONE OF HIS FEATURES WAS THE WORD FOR THE DAY WHICH WAS BROUGHT TOGETHER IN A BOOK BY THAT NAME IN 2002. HIS FUNNY STUFF IS JUST AS FUNNY TODAY, AND A FEW THINGS ARE ILLUSTRATED HERE.
BOB USED THE FOLLOWING EXPLANTION FOR THE WORD ABACUS: "THEY MAY NOT BE ABLE TO USE AN ABACUS, BUT IF THINK DOGS CAN'T COUNT, JUST LET FIDO SEE YOU PUT THREE BISCUITS IN YOUR POCKET, AND THEN TRY TO GIVE HIM TWO."
OR, "WHEN I WAS A KID IN KANSAS CITY I HAD TWO DOGS. THEIR NAMES WERE FAIL, A GERMAN SHEPARD, AND FURTHER ADO, A POODLE......". HE SAYS HIS AUNT WHO DID NOT LIKE DOGS WOULD INVITE HIM TO VISIT, BUT TELL HIM, "NOW PLEASE COME DOWN NEXT WEEKEND WITHOUT FAIL AND WITHOUT FURTHER ADO."
ONE MORE: "ATHLETIC ABILITY IS ONLY ONE PART OF SUCCESS IN SPORTS. IRON NERVE IS IMPORTANT, TOO. FOR EXAMPLE, IN GOLF, LOOKING AN OPPONENT IN THE EYE AND SAYING, "THAT WAS A PRACTICE SWING."
