Here's what has been lurking beneath the shakes on the back of the house all these years. That's mold you're looking at, and lots of it. Our builder thinks part of the problem is that the people who built these houses in the early '60's did not vent the shower/bathrooms. Moisture found its way into the structure, and combined with an attic venting system now known to be inadequate, and water getting out of the gutters and coming down the back of the house it bacame a breeding place for the mold you see. The wood under the shakes has largely delaminated and ca n be pulled off the building with ease. All this stuff will removed and replaced with new plywood, and a wrap which goes on under the vinyl siding
